This is a two-day advanced communication skills course, using a blended approach to learning. It is an intensive course, designed around individual experiential and reflective learning. Each participant is asked to consider a difficult communication situation they face in clinical practice and be prepared to talk about this in depth and practice the complex situation during a role play exercise on the course. For some people, the challenge might be about:
Course participants will learn about facilitative communication skills and communication strategies to enhance their personal knowledge. These skills and strategies will be practiced in a safe and supportive learning environment with us. Health and social care professionals may already be using some of these skills in practice, without realising it, but the course can enhance personal knowledge and use of the skills.
Each participant is allocated time to focus on a communication challenge they identify would help make a difference in practice and to their wellbeing. During this time, they are supported by their peers, who are encouraged to offer descriptive feedback using the principles of Agenda Led Outcome Based Analysis (ALOBA) to help target reflective learning. Offering personal feedback, which can be personally challenging will not be allowed. Furthermore, they will work with an experienced role-player to help them get the most from their experience.
The communication skills course ends with each participant listing the key skills they will apply to practice and how they intend to do this. Everyone is expected to participate in the course and must attend both days.
The course is very interactive and immersive. On day one we explore challenges to communication, help people reflect on their current practice and start to work with the facilitation skills they will use in their role play activities. Role playing provides a structured practise and a reflective learning process.
