Rediscovering yourself after a cancer scare: Cancer coaching

Rediscovering yourself after a cancer scare: Finding hope, identity, and confidence through coaching

A few years ago, I had an experience that changed the way I looked at life.

I was in A&E when a doctor told me to get my life in order. She had found what looked like lesions on my lungs. Most people gasp when I tell this story, and understandably so. But for me, it wasn’t a wholly negative experience.

While I waited for two weeks to see a consultant, I found myself reflecting deeply. I thought about my life, what mattered to me, and what I wanted my future to look like, (if I had one that is). I knew something needed to change. I just didn’t know what.

Eventually, I learned it was a clinical mistake. The “lesions” were simply artifacts from the x-ray trolley. Relief flooded in, but those two weeks had already shifted something inside me. They made me stop, think, and be completely honest with myself.

Soon after, I spent a day with a coach. For the first time in years, I talked openly about what motivated me, what I valued, and what kind of life I wanted to create. That conversation changed everything.

In my case, it led to big decisions. I left a secure, well-paid role as an Associate Professor and set up my own business. But coaching doesn’t always have to be about dramatic change. Sometimes, it’s simply about finding clarity, confidence, and a sense of direction when life feels uncertain.

From fear and uncertainty to a hopeful outlook

I was a cancer nurse specialist nurse for a number of years and saw how it is common to feel anxious and uncertain about one’s future when you have undergone cancer treatment.  What happens next? How do you move forward?

Coaching helps you explore these feelings safely and turn uncertainty into possibility.

It is about shifting from fear to hope, from ‘I don’t know’ to ‘I can’.

From “Who Am I Now?” → To Rediscovering Yourself

Cancer can change how you see yourself. Roles, routines, and even your body may feel different. Coaching gives you space to rediscover who you are today, not who you used to be.

Through guided reflection, you can reconnect with your values, recognise your strengths, and start to rebuild a confident, authentic sense of identity.

From Anxiety and Loss of Control → To Empowerment and Choice

After a major health challenge, it’s easy to feel like life is happening to you. Coaching helps you reclaim control by focusing on what you can influence and the choices available to you right now.

Even small, intentional actions, new routines, clear priorities, or gentle self-care, can rebuild a sense of confidence and purpose.

Coaching Can Help You Move Forward

My own experience showed me that clarity doesn’t always come from crisis but that taking time to reflect, with the right support, can be life-changing.

If you have cancer and are navigating questions about who you are now or what comes next, coaching can help you find clarity, confidence, and a renewed sense of direction.

You don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to start the conversation.

If you’re ready to explore what life after cancer could look like, one step, one conversation at a time , I would love to support you.

Coaching can help you move from fear to hope, from uncertainty to confidence, and from questioning who you are to rediscovering your authentic self.
