Transforming communication in complex care

A senior nurse recently attended one of our Advanced Communication Skills courses delivered in the Medical Education Department of an NHS Trust. Participants are encouraged to bring a real-world communication challenge from their workplace, allowing them to practice strategies in a safe, experiential setting with an actor taking the role of the person they need to engage with.  This provides an opportunity for them to practice transforming communication in complex care.

For this participant, the challenge was a difficult conversation with a colleague regarding communication with other team members. By applying the techniques learned on the course, she approached the conversation with clarity, confidence, and empathy.

When we met 4–6 weeks later for a follow-up session, she shared how the conversation had been extremely successful. Where there had previously been tension, she and her colleague were now collaborating effectively. She described feeling lighter, calmer, and more confident, and no longer consumed by lingering worries about the situation.

Shortly after, she was preparing for a potentially difficult discussion with the parents of a young patient. Using the skills from the course, she carefully planned her approach—gathering information, offering empathy, and listening before introducing her agenda. She later emailed to say the meeting had been a success, enabling the mother to openly discuss the impact of her daughter’s health on the family.

Reflecting on the course, she shared:

“The Advanced Communication Course has genuinely been one of the best courses I have attended in my 30+ years working in the NHS. I have always considered myself to be a good communicator, but the techniques I learned have massively improved how I communicate, especially when supporting staff, patients and families under extreme stress following life-changing injuries. I would highly recommend this training to anyone working in complex care or emotionally charged environments. Thank you again for such a valuable and insightful experience.”

This story highlights how experiential learning, combined with practical strategies and follow-up support, can transform relationships, reduce stress, and improve outcomes in high-pressure healthcare environments.

Before the course:

  • Stressful, tense conversations with colleagues
  • Communication challenges consuming thoughts
  • Uncertainty in difficult patient/family interactions

After the course:

  • Confident, calm, and effective conversations
  • Improved collaboration and workplace relationships
  • Better outcomes and emotional support for patients and families
