Discussing end of life care

A nurse calls Mr Wood to see if she can sit in on his clinical consultation with the oncologist.  He is participating in a research study with the nurse.

The nurse speaks to his wife (they all have a very good relationship) and asks if she has anything she would like to ask her on the phone.

The wife becomes distressed as she can see that Mr Wood is deteriorating and approaching the end of his life.  The family aren’t talking to each other and she is finding it very difficult to talk.

The nurse listens to Mrs Wood and gives her space to talk.  She summarises, reflects and uses an educated guess and acknowledges what Mrs Wood is saying.

What does the patient feel about this conversation?  What helped her?
