I wanted to write blogs for the website but I didn’t know where to begin. I have so much to say! In the end, I decided to start with a personal experience which has had a profound impact on my life. My story may well resonate with some of you.

I want this series of blogs to be helpful to both patients and their families and healthcare professionals. My story is written in various parts, otherwise it might begin to look a bit like War and Peace. In the first blogs I will share with you details of my story. The final blogs in this series will be a bit more academic and pick up on some of the key learning points in relation to communication and the sharing of information.

This experience led me to re-evaluate my life and so I don’t consider it to be a negative experience, although some of you might think differently. Prior to this experience, I was working hard towards becoming a Professor in a few years time. Reflecting on my life though, made me realise that there are other opportunities out there for me. I am now pursuing an unconventional academic career I suppose, which is taking me on an exciting new journey which continues to ebb and flow.
